| Cuba Marsh, Nov 11 2007 by Louis McCain von Vassmer | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Brrrrr. As the North Wind ripped the leaves from their branches, we embarked on our hike. Thankfully, as we walked, we warmed up and the sun managed to make a few appearances. In the end, the hike was actually very pleasant! Map in hand, Cyndi Duda walked the hardy 8 of us through the main trail. With the help of binoculars and scopes, we saw 19 bird species. The water birds/ducks were impressive. Pied-billed Grebe, Great Blue Heron, Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Mallard, American Wigeon, Bufflehead, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Amer. Coot, Ring-billed Gull, Amer. Crow, Black-capped Chickadee, Northern Cardinal, Amer. Tree Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, and House Finch. And we saw a nesting deer up close! We finished the field trip happily surprised by the amount of birds we saw at the marsh despite the crisp wind and gray skies. Cyndi suggested we should end the trip with warm comfort foods. We treated ourselves to the wonderful delights at Walker Brother Pancakes. Indeed, it was a perfect ending! What discoveries wait for us at Deer Grove Dec 9th? Thank you Cyndi for the great trip and to all of you who participated! |

| The Grove, Oct 14 2007 by Louis McCain von Vassmer | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This field trip was a woodpecker extravaganza! Cyndi Duda expertly led the 8
of us through the trails. The weather was perfect. There are many old barren trees
on the trails which is perfect for the feathered head-bangers! It was a cloudy
day which was better for birding since there was no glare while trying to get a get look at all the woodpeckers. We saw the Hairy, Downy, Red-bellied, Northern Flicker and the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker! Later on the trail, we saw the Ruby Crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, Water Thrush (80% sure), Yellow-rumped Warbler, White-throated Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, White-breasted Nuthatch, Mallard Ducks and one Black Duck. As we left the parking lot, a Red-tailed Hawk swooped in front of us after a rabbit. We saw a muskrat too. Of course, we saw the usual such as Morning Dove, Robins, and a Cardinal or two. We spent some time in The Grove's Interpretive Center looking at the live fish and reptiles, scanning the collections and specimens of insects, skins, feathers and skulls. I am reminded of my own vast collections I had as a child. Several of us ended the night by going to Johnny's Kitchen & Tap for their famous Wood Fired Roasted Chicken! Can't wait for next month's trip to Cuba Marsh. Thank you Cyndi for the great trip and all of you who participated! |
